Frequently asked questions about cellular agriculture

Cellular agriculture (CA) encompasses technologies for producing animal products—such as meat, fish, and dairy—directly from cells or microorganisms, without using the whole animal. This can be achieved through cell culture or precision fermentation.

Global consumption of animal products is growing. Cellular agriculture can sustainably meet a portion of this demand, with less impact on the climate, land use, water, biodiversity, and animal welfare than conventional production.

Market access depends on approval by European regulatory authorities. In the EU, the so-called Novel Food authorization process takes approximately 1–2 years. Consequently, it may take several more years before products become widely available.
